Lucy Helena Franzen-Bales is a portrait and documentary photographer based in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Taking her first analog photography class in between biomedical engineering courses while studying at the University of Rochester entirely changed the way that she saw the world and has been a regular practice in her life since.
After spending 2021 completing her master’s degree in Scotland at the University of Glasgow, she’s happily put down roots back in Minnesota.
Lucy published her first book of photographs, The Sun Does Shine in Scotland in 2022, was selected as one of Artpil ‘s 30 Under 30 Female Photographers for 2023, and was featured in ‘Just Women’ at Galerie Joseph le Palais in 2024. Her photographs have been selected for the Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition in 2020, 2022, and 2024.
